188) 참고 구약 성경의 창세기 5장에 따르면, 에녹은 아담의 6대손이며, 아담의 셋째 아들인 셋의 5대손으로 카인의 계보가 아닌 셋의 계보에 속한다. 또한, 에녹은 야렛(Jared)의 아들이며 성경의 최장수 인물인 므두셀라(Methuselah: 969년을 살았다.)의 아버지이며 노아의 증조할아버지로 나온다. 구약 성경의 창세기 4장에는 "에녹"이라는 동일한 이름을 가진 다른 인물이 나오는데 이 인물은 카인의 아들이다.

창세기 5장에는 각 인물들이 주로 누구의 자식이며 몇 해를 살다가 죽었는지가 기술되어 있는데, 죽음에 대해서는 "죽었다(died)"라는 낱말이 명시적으로 사용되고 있다. 에녹의 경우는 이와는 달리, "죽었다(died)"는 낱말을 사용하지 않고 다음과 같이 언급하고 있다. "에녹은 하나님과 함께 살다가 사라졌다. 하나님께서 데려가신 것이다
